There are some great low price machines under 300.00 new. You can buy a decent cheap machine at Target. Or you can go to a dealer and find a used refurbished machine for a good price. The old machines are good if you can find one in good to excellent condition. It is also a must to have the owner's manual. The cheaper machines at say, Target are not that great for upholstery type sewing. And, even the old Singers while they are work horses still need to be used with care. There are mini industrial machine of which I have one that I use strictly for my leather and upholestry work. New it cost about 600.00. I also have 2 old Singers that are probably 50/60 years old and I use them to do my button holes and other work. I have to remember to oil the machines between use because I live in a dry climate.
The old Singers while extremely reliable were made for garment sewing. I think I could get by using it here and there for heavy duty work but I wouldn't want to sew like that all the time with it. But, maybe someone else has another opinion.
My advice would be to get a mini-industrial. Necchi is a good one as is Thompson Mini Walker, this one is small and portable but weighs a ton.
Also, be careful buying on ebay and craigslist. Here is a link to a blog about this very issue.
Take about nine inches of thread and make about four knots in it. Thread this in your tension system in all directions. The knotted thread will help you remove lint residue in the discs. You should tread this through with the presser foot up and another time with it down.
Thank you! I am so excited! The Sencha blouse pattern from Colette Patterns and the copy of Couture Techniques from Fox Chapel Publishing will be well used but I think the best prize will be the dress-form pincushion from Dritz. Will display it proudly on my sewing machine cabinet to remind me why I love this website.
What a cute set of bunnies. And what a great idea for using my machine embroidery! They are so adorable. With every post I feel my creative juices flowing !
